Growing up, I had two options for haircuts: the neighborhood barber across the street, which was stuck in a time warp of outdated styles, and the impersonal rush of chain salons. Neither offered the kind of cut or experience I craved. Tired of starting styles at home only to have them butchered, I took matters into my own hands and learned the art of barbering.

But it wasn't just about the cut. Back then, barbershops seemed to fall into two categories: staffed by women who didn't quite understand men's styles, or by retired men offering a more traditional but often dated experience. The atmosphere itself was often uninspiring, a far cry from the kind of place you'd want to hang out.

As a basketball player, I envisioned a space that reflected the camaraderie and style of a man cave. Wood floors, big-screen TVs with Xboxes, and a soundtrack you'd hear hanging out with friends – that was the vibe I was after.

In 1999, that vision became a reality with the opening of the first Superior Barber Shop in Vista. This is my story, and the story of a place where men can get a fresh cut and feel right at home.
